Business and enterprise experience for young people

With more than 40 years’ experience, Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading business and enterprise education charity. Across the UK more than 300,000 students took part in YE programmes last year.

In the Company and Team Programmes, the main programmes run by Chiltern YE, students set up and run their own company over the course of an academic year. The students experience the full range of business skills including Production, Sales, Marketing, Personnel, IT and Finance. They also develop a range of skills that will benefit them whatever career they choose.

In the Chiltern area this year, there are about 150 students taking part in thirteen companies. Each company is supported by two or three business advisers who advise the companies. The students run the companies: they elect a board of directors, raise initial funding through sale of shares and then design, manufacture and sell a range of products or services. The advisers only interfere when things are going very wrong! The students learn not only how business and industry work but also how to work in a group of peers and how to communicate amongst themselves and with their suppliers, customers, competitors and the public.

The companies operate from September to March when they all meet for our Presentation Day at The Elgiva in Chesham to explain what they have achieved and, more importantly, what lessons they have learned during the year. The top companies go forward to compete in the County competition with later rounds at regional, national and international levels.

Can you help?
We’re always looking for support from local businesses and business people. If you think you can help a group of 16-year-olds develop their enterprise skills we’d like to hear from you. We also welcome help in kind: RCA Design hosts our web site, GE Healthcare provide printing facilities and several local organisations including Arqiva, Waitrose, The Roald Dahl Museum and GE Healthcare provide meeting venues for the YE companies.
